Basic rules of interaction with wild animals
- Do not touch a wild animal.
- Do not speak loudly next to a wild animal. This could stress the animal and make it feel threatened which can worsen its condition (if it’s sick or injured), even lead to its death.
- Do not feed a wild animal. These practices affect the animal’s natural behaviour, it can cause health issues and even jeopardize our safety.
- Observe and enjoy wildlife from a safe distance.
- For observing birds we suggest the use of zoom lenses or binoculars!
Did you find an injured or sick wild animal?
- Did you find for instance a wild bird that does not fly or a sea turtle on the shore? Call NAXOS WILDLIFE PROTECTION at once at +306976797070 for further instructions.
- Call our association even if you are not sure whether the animal is unwell or not. Our experienced volunteers will be able to assess the animal’s well being from a photo or video.
Did you find a sea turtle?
- If you come across a sick/injured sea turtle on shore, call NAXOS WILDLIFE PROTECTION (+30 697 6797070) and the local Port Police (for Naxos Port Police call at +30 22850 22300) immediately.
- If you come across a sea turtle floating on the surface unable to dive, call us immediately for further instructions.
- If you get the opportunity to see a sea turtle, keep a safe distance from it, do not disturb it, do not touch it and, by no means, do you feed it.
Remember sea turtles are wild animals and any human contact could cause behavioural and health issues to them, but could also jeopardize our own safety. - If you see traces of a sea turtle on shore, or sea turtle hatchlings, call NAXOS WILDLIFE PROTECTION or the local Port Police immediately.
If you encounter a sea turtle, feel free to fill up the form here in order to help us in our research and observations!
